How your nervous system stops you
/Lately, a common topic has come up in somatic work.
The ways our nervous system stops us from doing something healthy.
At first glance, this may not seem like a big deal, but the truth is that many of us struggle to take care of ourselves based on our childhood experiences.
Your nervous system is always scanning for threats. If something in the present reminds the nervous system of something that happened in the past that felt scary or threatening, your nervous system will not allow you to move toward it.
Even if it's logically good for you like eating healthier or going to the gym.
And, on top of that, you logically may not know why attending a class (for example) is setting off your nervous system. It can be hard to identify.
Luckily, you don't have to know why it's happening.
Imagine, having the tools and knowledge of yourself so intimately that when you're triggered or your system wants to shut down, you can step towards the healthy habit with ease, curiosity, and care.
